QUESTION 1

Read and summarize written text in your words.

Historically, before mosquito-transmitted diseases were brought under control in the 20th century, they caused tens of thousands of deaths in some countries and hundreds of thousands of infections. Mosquitoes were shown to be the method by which yellow fever and malaria were transmitted from person to person by Water Reed, William C.Gorgas and associates in the U.S Army Medical Corps first in Cuba and then around the Panama Canal in the early 1900s. Since then other diseases have been shown to be transmitted the same way.

Mosquitoes are a perfect example of one of the many organisms that can host diseases. Of the known 14,000 infectious microorganisms, 600 are shared between animals and humans. Mosquitoes are known to carry many infectious diseases from several different classes of microorganisms, including viruses and parasites. Mosquito-borne illnesses include malaria, West Nile virus, elephantiasis, dengue fever, yellow fever etc. These infections are normally rare outside of certain geographic areas. For instance, dengue hemorrhagic fever is a viral, mosquito-borne illness usually regarded only as a risk in the tropics. However, cases of dengue fever have been popping up in the U.S along with the Texas-Mexican border where it has never been seen before. In 2015 it was also reported that, due to climate change, mosquitoes had started to spread historically rare diseases to Europe – malaria to Greece, West Nile virus to eastern Europe and chikungunya to Italy and France.

Since mosquitoes possess the ability to host several classes of infectious microorganisms, mosquito-transmitted diseases are the responsible factors of spreading parasites, malarial and viral infections; earlier these mosquito-borne illnesses were limited to specific geographical boundaries, but due to the climate changes, the cases of these infections had expanded its area in recent years.

QUESTION 2

Read and summarize written text in your words.

The Extinct Files is presented as young Wally Edwards’ science project. As Wally explains, he was going to do his project on his pet iguana, but Wally accidentally stumbled across a major discovery. Young Wally claims to have proof that dinosaurs are not extinct. The Extinct Files is a collection of images and observations Wally has made through sneaking out at night to observe dinosaur behaviour. The tongue-in-cheek observations make record of such things as dinosaur diets, health and fitness regimes, locomotion, education and reproduction.

Although presented as if they were photographs taped into the science project, Edwards’ illustrations for the book are rendered in watercolour, coloured pencils and gouache. The abundantly colourful illustrations are a great strength of what is a fun book. Edwards includes a number of humorous details in his illustrations, like the (musical) scales down the back of a singing dinosaur, the long flowing locks on the Gorgeousaurus, and the “hippie-style” decorations on the Groovysaurus.

This book will disappoint dinosaur-crazy youngsters looking for serious information about the subject of their passion. The book, however, will delight any readers looking for a playful frolic into the realm of possibilities. It is guaranteed to give the reader a good chuckle. Edwards’ enchanting artwork and playful use of words provides for a fun reading experience. This book is a worthy—and unique—addition to the voluminous collection of dinosaur books for children.
