QUESTION 1

Read and summarize written text in your words.

Many people are unaware of the presence of environmental sound at damaging levels, or of the level at which sound becomes harmful. Common sources of damaging noise levels include car stereos, children’s toys, motor vehicles, crowds, lawn and maintenance equipment, power tools, gun use, musical instruments, and even hair dryers. Noise damage is cumulative; all sources of damage must be considered to assess risk. If one is exposed to loud sound (including music) at high levels or for extended durations (85 dBA or greater), then the hearing loss will occur. Sound intensity (sound energy, or propensity to cause damage to the ears) increases dramatically with proximity according to an inverse square law; having the distance to the sound quadruples the sound intensity.

In the USA, 12.5% of children aged 6-19 years have permanent hearing damage from excessive noise exposure. The World Health Organisation estimates that half of those between 12 and 35 are at risk from using personal audio devices that are too loud.

Hearing loss due to noise has been described as primarily a condition of modern society. In preindustrial times, humans had far less exposure to loud sounds. Studies of primitive peoples indicate that much of what has been attributed to age-related hearing loss may be long-term cumulative damage from all sources, especially noise. People living in preindustrial societies have considerably less hearing loss than similar populations living in modern society.

Long-term exposure to damaging loud noise levels, from various cumulative sources of high sound intensity, causes permanent hearing loss, which is becoming a widespread phenomenon in the modern society as compared to the preindustrial societies.

QUESTION 2

Read and summarize written text in your words.

Scientists from India and the UK launched a collaborative project to predict monsoon by studying ocean processes in the Bay of Bengal and atmospheric measurements. While scientists from the University of East Anglia (UEA) will release underwater robots to monitor impact of ocean conditions on monsoon rainfall, the collaborators from the University of Reading and India will use Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) aircraft to take atmospheric measurements at the same time.

This combined study is expected to help in forecasting the arrival of the monsoon more accurately than ever before. Improving rainfall prediction, as the research team is trying to achieve, can not only improve the livelihoods of millions of people by revolutionising subsistence farming but also help mitigate the damage caused by monsoon.

Lead researcher, Adrian Matthews, from UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said: “The Indian monsoon is notoriously hard to predict. It is a very complicated weather system and the processes are not understood or recorded in science.” His team would be doing the first-of-a-kind research that combines the oceanic and atmospheric measurements to monitor weather systems as they are generated.

  • The topic mentions that hearing loss in the preindustrial era was mainly attributed to old age, whereas in modern societies it is impacted due to extended exposure and proximity to noise through the use of loud audio devices.
