PTE Academic Writing Essay - Many old buildings are protected by law because they are part of a nation's history

Do old buildings which represent our history stand in the way of development? A few would agree and many would disagree. Those who say that old historic buildings should be demolished as they are nothing but an obstacle in the way of progress should know that these historic buildings are nation’s pride. Once gone, there is no chance to renovate or save that historic site.

It is important for communities to keep their identities intact and these historic buildings help define a community and hint at its past. If old buildings are repaired and reused instead of tearing them down, resources are efficiently used as the waste is reduced and resources are conserved. The new generation of craftsmen learns techniques from the structures of old buildings which are designed to last indefinitely. Also, old historic buildings are an excellent tourist attraction and provide jobs for local residents.

These have a story to tell. Like Taj Mahal in Agra which tells us about the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz. It’s design, architecture, structure, everything is unique and is one of the seven wonders. It’s one of the things India is famous for. Now imagine if instead of repairing it, it had been torn down and a new Taj Mahal had been constructed. We know it could never be the same.

We should remember that the historic buildings are the valuable things that we have inherited. We are the ones who can ensure their preservation. If these are demolished, a part of human life will be erased.
