PTE Essay – The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace –

Nuclear energy is the main source of electricity now.  It is a great alternative source of non-renewable energy but it has many flaws too. The accidents which occur due to poor maintenance put the lives of many at risk. Plutonium is important in creating bombs and is produced when fuel is reprocessed.

If it falls in the hands of wrong people, the destruction it would do is huge.
Yes, the maintenance cost of nuclear power plants is less, but a huge amount of money is needed to set up these plants and the construction period is usually of 5 years. One of the major setbacks of nuclear power plants is that the nuclear waste produced can not be disposed off as it is radioactive and would contaminate the environment in which it is disposed off.  Despite the safety systems applied to the nuclear reactors, accidents can happen due to leakage, causing serious burns, cancer,  blood diseases and bone decay.

Despite all the disadvantages, the positives of nuclear power outweigh its drawbacks. Nuclear power is highly efficient as it produces a high density of energy and requires less fuel as opposed to processing coal and oil. It has lower greenhouse emissions and does not release pollutants like carbon dioxide. Nuclear power plants do not require any maintenance for 40-60 years. Moreover, with the abundant supply of uranium, which is a significant element in the process of nuclear fission,  sufficient supply of power is assured, even if demands increase. And the nuclear power is reliable as it does not depend on the weather.

Nuclear power plant is the most convenient way to produce energy right now and it can not be denied.
