The field of alternative forms of medicines is so diverse that it can not be defined. Although the benefits and efficiency of these alternative therapies are yet to be determined it has n’t deterred people from opting for these practices.

Acupressure is thought to reduce nausea and anxiety, acupuncture is helpful for chronic pain and depression, aromatherapy is found to reduce pain, depression, and anxiety but more research is needed to fully determine its benefits. Ayurveda which originated in India and has persisted for so many years is widely used by practitioners to balance body, mind, and spirit to promote overall wellness. Homeopathy, which is based on the principle of treating like with like, has some clinical evidence which proves that it is more effective than placebos, though more research is needed.

What could be the possible reasons that so many people go for alternative medicines? Maybe because alternative medicine practitioners address not just the patient’s physical body but emotional and spiritual health also. Because of this emphasis on whole body care, a great deal of personal attention is enjoyed by the patient. Another draw to alternative medicine is that the main focus is on prevention of the disease before it occurs. Moreover, the cost is comparatively low.

But before trying any new kind of alternative medicine, there are some key factors which should be kept in mind. The evidence regarding safety and efficiency of alternative medicines is still limited which leaves many questions unanswered. ‘Natural’ and ‘safe’ should not be confused with each other. Not everything which is natural can be labeled as safe for consumption, it can have side effects of its own.

Before taking up any form of medicine, the primary health care taker should be considered to precautionary measure to avoid any damage. Alternative forms of medicine may be effective but should not be practiced without consultation.
