QUESTION 1

Read and summarize written text in your words.

The rapid growth of the fintech sector was largely a response to accelerating technology and changing customerpreferences in financial services (Fs). New technologies gavesmall, agile firms the ability to deliver innovative new financial products and services to clients and institutions. These entrants have largelyavoided traditional regulatory classification as they blurred the lines between finance and technology “fintech” and began to move into traditional FS activities, filling gaps left by traditional financial institutions (Fls) While fintech challenged the traditional models of regulation, the 2008 financial crisis created a widespread push for regulatory reform across the FS industry. The threat of collapse of many established financial institutions caused regulators to focus on re-stabilizing the financial system, which they did by imposing new regulations such as requirements for higher capital ratios. As a result, regulation in FS worldwide has become increasingly tight complex, and difficult to adhere to. Some particular pain points for Fis trying to remain compliant.

  • Data requirements Regulators require Fls to collect ever more granular customer data increasing the complexity of onboarding requirements and the burden of data storage.
  • Overlapping regulatory requirements Disparate regulation applied in different jurisdictions creates huge regulatory overlap for entities that operate across borders, forcing them to adhere to multiple discrete sets regulatory requirements.
  • Outcome-based regulation Regulations are outcome-based rather than process-based, putting the onus on individual Fls to determine how to adhere and creating layers of complex and unique regulatory processes.

QUESTION 2

Read and summarize written text in your words.

Chinese construction workers recently made an explosive discovery. They found a new species of feathered dinosaur. The animal lived about 66 to 72 million years ago, right before a giant impact wiped out large dinosaurs in a catastrophic mass extinction. Scientists named the new species Tongtianlong limosus, or “muddy dragon on the road to heaven”— a simple way to convey its last moments as is struggled to escape the binds of the mud. It is very lucky the dragon/dinosaur got stuck in the mud because it is one of the best-preserved fossils scientists have ever seen.

Tongtianlong belongs to a family of feathered dinosaurs called oviraptorosaurs, which had short, toothless heads and sharp beaks. Several species have been discovered in the last few decades in North America and Asia, ranging in size from four feet to over 22 feet long. The mud dragon, the sixth species to be found in the Ganzhou area of southern China, was about the size of a large sheep or small donkey.

The existence of so many oviraptorosaurs species crowded together in one region of China has given scientists new insights into the twilight era of the dinosaurs. The mud dragon’s upper jaw is highly convex at the front of its snout, which implies a specialized diet. The construction workers discovered this specimen by using dynamite to dig up the dirt for a new school “You can actually see near the fossil where some of the dynamite was placed, and that dynamite did destroy part of the back end of the animal,” says Steve Brusatte, of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Geosciences. “But without the dynamite, it never would have been exposed. It’s a stark example of the fine line between finding a whole new species of dinosaur and never knowing that this species existed.”
