Xenophobia refers to the fear of a person from strangers or foreigners. Xenophobia can manifest in many ways like involving the relations and perceptions of an ingroup towards an outgroup. This includes a fear of losing identity, suspicion of its activities, aggression, and desire to eliminate its presence to secure a presumed purity which results in violence. Today people are migrating to western countries for better career prospects and life. But many western countries have stuck in the trap of Xenophobia because the number of incidents has risen in the form of hate crime. In my opinion, both individuals and government should work together to curb Xenophobia.

Different wear and language of foreigners often get another person suspicious resulting in violence. For example: in 1994, gangs of armed youth destroyed the homes of foreign nationals living in Johannesburg. Xenophobia has been present in both the apartheid and post-apartheid eras. For instance, during the Second Boer War between the British and Boers, poor Afrikaners had looted British-owned shops. In 1913, South Africa had passed numerous acts like “The Immigrants Regulation Act of 1913” intended to keep out Indians.

The momentum of these incidents are getting increasing, so there is a strong need to find out the solution for the benefit of foreign nationals. The government can overcome Xenophobia by taking measurable steps like hate speeches and articles should be made punishable offense through which a clear-cut message will be given that Xenophobia is unacceptable. Moreover, the Government should organize awareness programs and educate its citizens. For instance, the introduction to Nobel Peace Prize can motivate the people to work towards unity.

Social media can play great importance in this regard as social networking sites can help us in spreading awareness about the harmful effects of Xenophobia. Other possible steps are to adopt the policy of equality at companies. Promote respect for foreigners in schools, hospitals, Public places, and Government institutions. People should travel around the world to discover new cultures of different countries so that they can judge the people of another country from their real characteristics, rather than judging all the people of the country in the same way.

In nutshell, every problem has possible solutions, so both the government and individuals work jointly to eradicate it.
